On August 25th, 2000, Columbus, Ohio's Kahiki Restaurant officially closed its doors
after nearly 40 years of south seas merriment. The following evening, The Tiki News
sponsored a farewell celebration at the Kahiki in honor of this great Midwestern Polynesian cathedral. And as you might expect,
Dave and Cindy were there...

Twilight at the Kahiki. The
invite only line for guests begins to form up around 6pm. This is not a fashionably late crowd.
Fashion, in fact, has very little to do with the Kahiki.

"Ahhh-loww-HA!" Guests were given leis and
swanky souvenier shirts at the door.
| |
Just inside the lobby, colorful characters await! There's some
interesting statuary there, as well...
In the main room, at nearly 40 feet tall,
the mighty Kahiki is lord of all he surveys.
He is also a stage and a fireplace.
Downstairs, in the forbidden party room,
the secret mysteries of buffet-style dining are revealed...
| |
Beneath Kahiki's mighty nose, LA's King Kukalele
plays the greatest Ukalele hits of all time! All three of them.
| |
Behold! It's the Polynesian God of Wicker!
Fully afloat after all of those Headhunters, Cindy takes control of
the party and declares "full steam ahead!!!"
| |
The God of Wicker agrees to the challenge!
Bartender Mike, one more Mai Tai please!
Hey everybody! It's Don Tiki, from Honolulu! They're exotic...
And so, the happy couple sails on, as the mighty Kahiki slowly vanishes into the mist...
Farewell, Kahiki! May you one day rise again! |
